Easy 4th of July Cookie Recipe
You can never have too much red white and blue food at your Fourth of July celebration! Whether you are hosting a cookout or having a small family party, you need some fun desserts. And this easy cookie recipe is perfect for any patriotic holiday, including Memorial Day or Veterans Day!
I’m all about easy recipes, I so used a box of cake mix to make these Fourth of July cookies. Cake mix makes soft, chewy cookies every time. Plus, it is a great base for so many different cookie flavors. Throw in colorful sprinkles, candy and white chocolate, and you have a festive cookie for the Fourth!

Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients for these July 4th cookies. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.
- Cake mix — yellow cake mix or white cake mix works best. I used vanilla flavor for these, so I didn’t add any vanilla extract. You can add vanilla if you are using plain cake mix.
- Eggs — large eggs
- Milk — to thin out the dough a little
- Butter — You’ll need to melt butter, but you can use vegetable oil if you prefer.
- White chocolate chips
- Red white and blue sprinkles — added to the mix for a burst of color, kind of like fireworks. I found these at Walmart.
- Red white and blue M & M’s — I like to add the candies right after the cookies come out of the oven so the colors don’t run too much.
How to Make 4th of July Cookies
First, beat the eggs with an electric mixer in a large mixing bowl. Alternately, you can use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. Add the cake mix, milk and melted butter, and mix until well combined.
Next, use a spatula to gently mix in the sprinkles. If you use a mixer for this, it will break up the candies too much.
Scoop up a tablespoon of cookie dough, and place dough on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, foil or silicone baking mats for easy clean up. Keep the cookie dough balls about 2 inches apart, as they will spread out. Don’t press down on the dough as this will make the cookies too flat.
Bake the cookies for 10-12 minutes. When the edges are firm, they are ready to come out of the oven. The centers may be soft, but they will firm up as the cookies cool. Place a few M&M’s into the warm cookies, and allow them to cool. You can remove them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Storage
Store the cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They keep fresh for 4-5 days. You can freeze the cookies for up to 3 months — they freeze and thaw well. You can also make ice cream sandwiches — another fun dessert!
Recipe Tip
Don’t press cookies down before baking as they will be too flat.
Don’t over bake — they are done when the edges are firm and a light golden brown.
Add the M&M candies right after baking so the colors don’t run.
