Simple Ingredients

You only need a few ingredients to make this easy crockpot smoked sausage and potatoes recipe. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Smoked sausage — I usually buy kielbasa smoked sausage or smoked polish sausage from our local Polish grocery store, but any smoked or already cooked sausage will work. If you don’t want pork sausage, use turkey sausage or chicken sausage.
  • Baby potatoes – or Yukon gold potatoes or red potatoes
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder — for seasoning
  • Butter
  • Fresh green beans — optional, but makes it a one dish dinner. You can use frozen green beans, but I would avoid canned green beans as those would be overcooked
  • Olive oil — or non stick spray to coat the bottom of the crockpot

The first time I made kielbasa and potatoes in the slow cooker, I used 1 pound of each. That wasn’t enough for us, so the next time I made this easy recipe, I used 1 pound of potatoes and 2 ropes of sausage.

How to Make Slow Cooker Sausage and Potatoes

First, rinse the baby potatoes under cold water in a colander, and pat dry. Next, slice them into quarters. Slice smaller potatoes in half.

Then, slice the smoked sausage into rounds, about 1/2 inch thick. If you want to add fresh green beans, wash and trim them. You won’t need them right away if you are cooking on low heat, unless you like them very soft.

Add a little bit of olive oil or vegetable oil to the bottom of your slow cooker. Or, spray the bottom with non stick cooking spray.

Next, add the potatoes to the slow cooker and season with salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. Stir to coat with the seasonings.

Add the kielbasa slices. Finally, add a little bit of butter on top.

Cooking Time

You can cook the crock pot sausage and potatoes on high heat or low heat. Cook for 3 to 4 hours on high heat and 6 to 8 hours on low heat or until the potatoes are fork tender.

If you want to add fresh green beans, and you’re cooking on low, add them about 2 hours before you’re ready to eat. Otherwise, they may be overcooked.

When done, give the sausage mixture a quick stir. Then, dig into this simple meal of juicy, perfectly seasoned kielbasa sausage and tender potatoes. So good!

Storage

Store leftover smoked sausage and potatoes in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Leftovers should keep well for 3-5 days. For longer storage, this easy crockpot recipe makes a great freezer meal. Just store in a freezer safe container, and it reheats well.

Recipe Tip

You can add green beans at the beginning of the cooking time if you are cooking on high. Add them during the last 2 or 3 hours if you are cooking on low, so they won’t overcook.

I had no time and 2 lbs of smoked sausage so I googled โ€œcrock pot smoked sausageโ€ and this recipe came up. It is so amazing! My 8 year old daughter loved it. Havenโ€™t heard from the rest of the family yet. Only change is I sprinkled in some parsley and used frozen green beans. My crock pot runs hot – this was ready after about 2 1/2 hours on high.5 stars

So glad you liked the recipe, Meghan. Thank you for the wonderful review!

  4. Amanda S Ellison says:

This is so delicious. The way the flavors meld creates something really special. I have been making this recipe for 20 years and I don’t even know where I first got it but it was a staple here. This is my go to for a big crowd. I’ve made it for homeless encampment and tonight I am making it for 50 people, using my big electric roaster! Yummy. I found your recipe for scaling it to be sure I make enough because I know how people unexpextedly love this!5 stars

    1. Dee says:

Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad you love the recipe!

  5. Vanessa says:

Do you toss the green beans in olive oil and seasoning before adding them on top? Just wondering how seasoned they will be if not

    1. Dee says:

I either season them or spoon some of the cooking liquid over them.

  6. Derek says:

Easy set it and forget it! Long and slow was great for a busy day at work! Gotta try this one!5 stars

  7. Marcy says:

If you cut down the recipe to one pound do you cut the seasoning in half also?
How much broth would you recommend for the recipe halved ?

    1. Dee says:

Yes, you should cut the seasonings in half. I don’t use broth, so I can’t say for sure — maybe 1/4 cup?

  8. Beverly Smith says:

Do you need to add some chicken broth to crock pot so it won’t burn?

    1. Dee says:

I just add a little olive oil or cooking spray before adding the food, and I’ve never had it burn. You can add a little broth if you want it saucier.

  9. Joyce says:

I used canned new potatoes, frozen green beans and the rest of the recipe as directed..added in a can of fire roasted tomatoes and a half can of sauerkraut I needed to use up…fabulous!!!5 stars

    1. Dee says:

Thanks for sharing your tips, Joyce. Glad you liked it!

  10. Lori says:

Can you substitute rice instead of potatoes?

    1. Dee says:

I have never tried using rice, so I don’t know if it would work here.
