Chocolate-covered pretzels are one of our favorite Christmas treats. They are incredibly easy to make, and everyone loves the salty sweet combo!
If you’re looking for an easy treat to make during the Christmas season, you’ll love this easy pretzel rod recipe. My whole family is crazy about them!
Christmas pretzels make fun homemade treats for holiday parties. We serve them at my daughters annual Gingerbread house party, along with white chocolate puppy chow, and they always go fast.
You can also add a few pretzels to a cellophane bag, along with peppermint bark and crockpot Christmas candy and give these homemade gifts to friends, neighbors and coworkers!
Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this Christmas pretzel rod recipe. You can find them in your grocery store, craft store or online.
- Pretzel rods — large pretzel rods, not pretzel sticks
- Candy coating or white chocolate or almond bark or milk chocolate — I love using candy coating because it melts easily and is available in seasonal colors.
- Holiday sprinkles — your choice of sprinkles or small candies to decorate the pretzels
You will also need small microwaveable bowls, spoons, a fork, baking sheet and wax paper or parchment paper for the cooking process.
How to Make Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods
First, place the different colored candy melts into a separate microwave-safe bowl. I use the microwave to melt chocolate and candy coating. If you prefer using a double boiler on the stove top, you can do that.
Melt the candy coating according to package directions. I like to melt chocolate in the microwave in increments, starting with 30 seconds, then 15 seconds, until it is completely melted.
Then, dip pretzel rod (1 at a time) into the melted candy coating. Use a fork or spoon to help coat each rod about halfway with melted chocolate.
Allow excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Then, place pretzel rod onto a cookie tray lined with wax paper.
Decorate the dipped pretzels with holiday sprinkles before the coating dries. If you want to drizzle chocolate or different colors over the pretzels, it’s best to wait until the melted coating is mostly dry.
Then, use a fork or piping bag to drizzle chocolate over the pretzels.
Allow the white chocolate-dipped pretzel rods to dry at room temperature. Or, pop the tray into the fridge to speed up the drying process.
How to Store
Store the Christmas pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature. They keep well for 2-3 weeks before becoming a little soggy.
Freeze chocolate-covered pretzels in freezer bags for up to 3 months for best taste.
Variations
Holiday pretzels are easy to customize. You can change the candy coating to match the season. We make Patriotic pretzels, Halloween Pretzels and spring pretzels just by switching colors.
I found peppermint flavored white candy coating that is perfect for these Christmas pretzel sticks. You can add a drop of peppermint extract to plain white chocolate candy melts for the same flavor.
Use crushed candy canes, small candy, chopped nuts, mini marshmallows or crushed Oreos to decorate the pretzels instead of or along with the sprinkles.
If you want to use semi-sweet chocolate chips or white chocolate chips, you’ll need to add shortening or coconut oil so that the chocolate is easier to work with.
Tips
Place a few sprinkles or your favorite toppings on the wax paper before adding the coated pretzels. This makes it easy to decorate the backs of the pretzels and prevents the back of the pretzel from being flat.
You can also let the pretzels dry standing up in a tall glass jar.
Allow the melted chocolate or candy coating to dry slightly before adding sprinkles. This will help the sprinkles stick better. Just don’t wait too long.
If you have a lot of leftover melted chocolate, dip pretzel twists or cookies for a quick treat!

Ingredients
- 10 Pretzel rods
- 3 cups Candy melts white, red, green
- holiday sprinkles
Instructions
- Melt the candy coating according to the directions on the package.
- Dip each pretzel rod into the melted candy, and use a fork or spoon to help coat the pretzel at least halfway up
- Allow excess coating to drip off into the bowl, and let dry on wax paper.
- Before the coating dries completely, add the sprinkles, and use a fork to drizzle different colors over the pretzels.
