Make a Wood Slice Heart Wreath

I have the sweetest little Valentine’s Day decoration to share with you today. I’ve been working on it for what seems like a long time, but I wanted to get it exactly how I envisioned it, so I didn’t rush the process. Do you ever do this? Anyway, I just loved all of the wood slice ornaments and crafts that were so popular last fall and during Christmas, and I wanted to something similar for Valentine’s Day. So, I made this wood slice heart wreath, and I’m so happy with the way it turned out.

My husband trimmed some branches from one of the palo verde trees in the front yard before Christmas, and I used some of the wood slices to make Christmas ornaments. I needed more slices for the heart wreath, so he cut a bunch of them. If you don’t have access to a tree branch, you can buy precut slices of wood at your local craft store or online.

Here are the supplies I used to make this wood slice heart wreath:

• 34 wood slices, about 2 inches wide 
• Tacky Glue
• Pink chalk paint, but any craft paint works too
• Twine
• Burlap flowers
• Burlap ribbon
• Paint brush
• Drill for adding a hole at the top 

After the wood was cut, my husband very sweetly helped assemble the wreath! I think it’s his Valentine’s Day present to me, and I love it! 

There are two layers, and the top pieces are just glued onto the bottom ones with Tacky Glue. Hubs drilled a small hole in the very top wood slice so that I could thread some twine through and hang the wreath over the mantel. If you don’t want to drill a hole in the wood, you can always loop some ribbon over the top slice.

If you’ve seen some of my other Valentine crafts, you know how I’ve been crushing on Annie Sloan’s Antoinette chalk paint, and that’s exactly what I used to paint the top layer of wood. I just painted a thin coat in the center of each wood slice, and I didn’t bother with the second layer because I think the yellowish shade of wood looks nice with the soft pink.

I wanted to embellish the wreath a little, so I found some burlap flowers that I had and used a round stencil brush to add pink polka dots to the burlap. I also painted the center of the flowers. Then, I looped some twine through the hole and used thin burlap ribbon to hang the wreath.

It’s definitely a rustic Valentine’s Day wreath, but y’all may know by now how I love rustic decor! And best of all, this little wood slice wreath was free — yes! The mantel is almost done. I just have to tweak the sides a little, and then I can show it off. If you’ve seen some of the other crafts I’ve done lately, you can probably guess the color scheme — yep, pink and white!
