Ingredient Notes

Here’s an overview of what you need for this Valentine puppy chow recipe. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Rice Chex cereal — or a generic alternative
  • Peanut butter — the creamy variety works best
  • Butter — I use salted but unsalted butter is fine
  • White chocolate — or almond bark
  • Vanilla extract — for flavor
  • Powdered sugar — to coat the mixture
  • Candy — look for seasonal m&m’s. You can also add conversation hearts, Red Hots or festive sprinkles. Just use your favorite candy here.

How to Make Valentine Puppy Chow

First, melt the butter, peanut butter and white chocolate in a large bowl. We use the microwave, but you can do this on the stove. Add the vanilla, then add the cereal, and stir to coat. Mix with powdered sugar until fully coated, then add your candy.

Storage

Store puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature. It should keep fresh for up to a week. You can also freeze this simple treat for up to 3 months.

Recipe Tip

For easy mixing, place half of the powdered sugar in a gallon freezer bag, add the coated cereal, and top with remaining powdered sugar before shaking. You may need to do this in batches.

Always microwave chocolate in increments so it doesn’t seize. Follow the directions on the bag for each manufacturer’s recommendation.
