Hi There!
We had a big monsoon storm in the Arizona desert yesterday, which was a nice break from the summer heat. I know in many places, getting rain isn’t big news, but here, when it rains, it usually pours — cats, dogs, elephants, wooly mammoths — you get the idea! Every once in a while, the rain leads to flooding, and several parts of the Valley were affected. We were lucky we didn’t have any major damage.
Last night, we sat on the patio and enjoyed the cool evening, which is a rarity for August! It was still raining, but the setting sun was trying to break through the dark clouds.
Remember the sunny sunflower I showed you last week? This is how it looked last night.
It’s standing up again today, minus a few more petals. The yard was flooded, but you can see that the grass is nice and green. The water level in the pool rose, but it never got past the rim.
The kids love puddles, even when they’re not so big. Whenever we go out after a storm, I have to keep the younger ones from stomping in the puddles. But when we’re at home, they can wiggle their toes in the water without a problem!
The last time it rained, the kids found a little desert toad in the yard and named him Hopkins. My little guy was excited to have a pet toad, until he realized that Hopkins didn’t plan on staying. So yesterday, he went out calling for the little toad, but Hopkins probably found another yard to explore. With the furboys in residence, who can blame him!
We took a brief walk in the desert to see if any water remained, but it had all drained away. The ground is still wet, and signs of our second spring are starting to appear.
This brief cool spell after the monsoon has been awesome, and I can’t wait to start decorating and crafting for fall. It’ll get hot again, but still, I can dream, can’t I?
