Hi There!
So the other day, I was browsing through the Anthropologie online catalog, and I had one of those Pier One moments — you know, when those cute items in the store start speaking to the surprised shoppers? Well, that’s not exactly what happened here, but I did fall in love with the crossed spoon plate stand I saw, and I was inspired to try to make my own.
Normally, I don’t really do knock-off projects, but I have some of my grandmother’s vintage spoons, and I thought that making a retro crossed spoon plate stand would be a great way to preserve them.
I don’t have a full set of my grandmother’s spoons, and in my house, we tend to go through flatware like crazy. The kids have a tendency to throw their utensils out by mistake when they clear the table, and I would hate to lose these vintage pieces.
The spoons have a pretty starburst pattern on the handles, but I’m not exactly sure what the pattern is called. If you happen to have the name, I would love to know!
The Anthropologie plate stand is silver, so I decided to mimic that design by spray painting a plastic plate stand that I already had.
I used a metallic paint by Rustoleum — it’s not super shiny, but it has enough shine to make the plastic stand look like metal. Then, I just glued the spoons to the front of the plate stand so that they cross each other. I tried using E6000, but it wouldn’t hold — maybe it doesn’t work to well in our super hot weather. I ended up using hot glue, and this worked right away.
I think it’s a pretty close match! I kept the spoons lower than the original item because I didn’t want them to cover so much of the plate. I’m using my crossed spoon plate stand to display one of my grandma’s vintage Franciscan Ware plates, which seems totally appropriate!
This was such an easy craft, and it only cost about $4 for the spray paint — I had everything else. That’s much cheaper than the original Anthro plate stand, which is about $20! I also like this stand better because it keeps the plate off the surface, and of course, it has a lot of sentimental value!
Have you ever had something speak to you?
Thanks so much for stopping by — have a great day!
Dee 🙂
