Cheesy pull apart bread is garlic bread stuffed with loads of mozzarella cheese and cheddar cheese and baked until warm and melty. This easy appetizer recipe is perfect for game day, holidays and parties.
Pull Apart Garlic Bread
This cheesy pull apart bread recipe is a favorite around here. I make it a lot during football season, but it’s a great appetizer during the holidays. Sometimes, I even serve cheesy pull-apart garlic bread on pasta night instead of our usual garlic bread!
If you’ve never had pull-apart bread, it’s basically a loaf of bread stuffed with melted cheese and garlic butter and partially sliced so it’s easy to break off pieces to snack on. Think of this easy recipe as the ultimate appetizer for cheese lovers!

Cheesy Garlic Bread Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients for this cheesy garlic pull-apart bread. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.
- Loaf of crusty bread — I like boule bread for this recipe, but a dense loaf of French bread or sourdough bread will work, as well.
- Butter — I use salted butter, but unsalted butter will work.
- Garlic — I use a clove of garlic and garlic powder for maximum flavor
- Shredded cheese — a blend of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. I like to add Parmesan cheese for even more cheese flavor sometimes.
- Dried parsley — for flavor
How to Make Cheesy Pull Apart Bread
First, use a serrated knife to slice into loaf of bread into a criss-cross pattern. Be careful not to cut all the way through the bottom of the loaf or the cheese will run out!
Next, add the minced garlic, garlic powder and parsley to a small bowl with the butter. Partially melt the butter in the microwave so it’s soft and easy to spread. You can melt butter completely, but I prefer softened butter since I find it easier to work with here.
Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with an extra large piece of aluminum foil. You will be wrapping the loaf with the foil, so make sure it’s large enough. Use a knife to spread most of the garlic butter in between the slices. You’ll want to save a little for the top.
Then, stuff the cheese in between the slices. Make sure to stuff it as far down into the loaf as possible. You can add more cheese if you feel you need more. Then, brush the remaining butter over the top of the bread.
Baking Time
Bake the bread covered for 20 minutes. Then, pull back the foil and bake for another 10 minutes. This will allow the top to get golden brown.
Serve the cheese stuffed bread loaf right away so you can get a gorgeous melty cheese pull when you pull the bread slices apart! Your fingers will be buttery and messy, but it will be worth it!
Recipe Tip
Choose a sturdy dense loaf of bread that won’t fall apart when pulled.
Make sure you don’t slice all the way through the loaf.
Use a piece of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around the bread.
Storage
If you have any leftovers, store the bread in an airtight container or wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can freeze leftovers in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Reheat the cheese bread on low heat in the oven until warm, add more cheese if needed.
Make Ahead
You can make the bread a day or 2 ahead of time, wrap it well in plastic wrap, and store in the fridge until ready to bake.
