Egg in Toast

So, what do you call an egg fried in a hole in a slice of bread? We have always called this easy recipe toad-in-a-hole, but most people call it egg in hole. Some folks call it egg in a basket or egg in nest or even frog in a hole.

We have been making this easy breakfast for years. My picky kids have always liked scrambled eggs or deviled eggs, and this is the only way I could get the kids to eat fried eggs, besides breakfast sandwiches or fried egg sandwiches. We make eggs in hole a little different. We use a loaf of crusty bread, like French bread or sourdough bread. And, we make hard cooked eggs instead of over easy, as most of us do not like runny yolks.

Ingredients

This is a 3 ingredient recipe, as you can add preferred seasoning later. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Eggs — We usually do 4 or 5, but you can use more or less.
  • Butter — for flavor when frying
  • Loaf of Bread — thick bread, like a loaf of sourdough or French bread. Texas toast will also work.

How to Make Egg in a Hole

First, slice the bread into slices about 1 inch thick. Tear out part of the middle, leaving some bread on the sides and ends. You can use a round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter, but I think oval openings work better for this shape of bread.

tear middle out of bread slices.

You can use a skillet or griddle to cook the eggs in toast. It really depends on how much you are making. You just melt some butter, and toast the bread on 1 side. Then, flip the bread, add the eggs, and cook a little more.

Flip the bread one more time, and cook until you have golden brown toast and the eggs reach your desired doneness.

Serving Suggestions

While the crispy, buttery bread with egg is good on its own, you can always add your favorite toppings to make it even better. We like to add sliced avocado, micro greens or sprouts, cheese, hot sauce, tomato slices and a little salt and pepper. Fresh fruit always rounds out the meal!

Storage

While eggs in the hole are best enjoyed right away, you can store leftovers for later, especially if you cook the eggs until firm. Just store in an airtight container in your fridge for 2-3 days. My husband and son love the leftovers for a quick breakfast or snack the next day. Reheat on the stove for best results.

Recipe Tip

Cook over medium to medium-low heat so the eggs and toast cook evenly.

For sunny side up eggs, do not flip the bread after adding the eggs.
