Ingredient Notes
You only need 2 simple ingredients for this delicious hot chocolate dip. They should be easy to find in your grocery store or online. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.
- Hot cocoa mix — I used Swiss Miss milk chocolate flavor this time, but any brand will work.
- Cool Whip — Make sure this non dairy whipped topping is thawed before using.
How to Make Hot Chocolate Dip
First, add the thawed whipped topping to a large mixing bowl. Then, sprinkle the dry cocoa mix over the Cool Whip.
Stir the chocolate mixture together with a large spoon or spatula until it is fully combined.
You want the dip to be as smooth as possible and without any lumps of cocoa.
What to Serve with Hot Cocoa Dip
You can top the dip with mini marshmallows, mini chocolate chips and holiday sprinkles or crushed peppermint candies for a festive presentation.
Serve this chocolate dip with your favorite dippers. We love hot cocoa with animal crackers and cookies, so we serve them with this dip. Oreo cookies, vanilla wafers, chocolate chip cookies or your favorite cookies will work here.
Graham crackers, pretzel sticks, candy canes and fresh fruit are also good with sweet dips.
How to Store
Refrigerate the dip until you are ready to serve. It can be enjoyed right away, but the flavor deepens after an hour or 2 in the fridge.
Store leftover dip in an airtight container or in the serving bowl covered with plastic wrap for up to 4 days. This dip does not freeze and thaw well.
Recipe Tips
The flavor of the dip will vary with different brands of hot cocoa mix. We used 3 packets of mix in this dip or about one half cup.
Mix the dip with a spatula or spoon. If you use a hand mixer, the Cool Whip will break down and won’t be light and fluffy.
Add peppermint extract for peppermint hot cocoa flavor. Add cinnamon for Mexican style hot cocoa dip. You can add cream cheese for more of a cheesecake flavor or marshmallow fluff for a sweeter dip.
