Easy Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes with maple syrup and brown sugar is a simple pressure cooker side dish that’s perfect for Thanksgiving or any dinner!

Some of my favorite Instant Pot recipes are for side dishes — like Instant Pot Potato Salad, Jasmine Rice, Orange Ginger Carrots and these easy Instant Pot mashed sweet potatoes. Potatoes take quit a while to cook on the stove, but Instant Pot mashed potatoesย  — regular or sweet — are so much faster.

Like most of you, we always have sweet potatoes for a Thanksgiving side dish. Sometimes we have Easy Stove Top Candied Yams, but usually we make easy mashed sweet potatoes. My kids are crazy about sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, but after I figured out that they just wanted to eat the marshmallows, I wanted to make healthy, or healthier, mashed sweet potatoes.

The good new is you can make Instant Pot mashed sweet potatoes as healthy as you want. You can serve them as is for the healthiest sweet potatoes, or you can add butter, brown sugar and maple syrup to make them even better. It’s a holiday, so calories don’t count!

How do you make mashed sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot?

I’m all about easy recipes, especially around the holidays, so we’re making whole sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot. None of this peeling and cubed sweet potatoes stuff today! The only cut you’ll make is cutting the sweet potatoes in half, which just helps the cook evenly.

So, we’re making whole sweet potatoes, but we’re cutting them in half — ‘kay? Then, we put them on the trivet in the Instant Pot.

How long do you pressure cook a sweet potato?

It varies. If you’re peeling and cubing a sweet potato, you cook it for about 5 minutes. But, if you absolutely hate peeling sweet potatoes, and you want to cook whole sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot, it takes around 30 minutes.

Mind you, it varies, and the cook time will depend upon the thickness of the sweet potatoes. So, we’re talking about thick sweet potatoes that you want to mash. For mashed Instant Pot sweet potatoes, 25 to 30 minutes is perfect!

Just, place the cut potatoes on the trivet, with water underneath, of course, and cook for 25 minutes. Allow a few minutes to release, then scrape or squeeze the potatoes out of their jackets, put them into a bowl, and mash.

Since it’s Thanksgiving, you’ll want to add brown sugar and maple syrup to make these Instant Pot mashed potatoes extra special.ย  You can even top them with marshmallows andย  pop them into the oven if you want. No judging here! And if you’re going for healthy mashed sweet potatoes, just take them out of the skins, and you’re good to go!

So, if you’re looking for easy Instant Pot mashed sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving, try this recipe. It’s perfect when you’re using the oven to roast the turkey and you need easy side dish recipes.
