This OREO Cake Balls recipe makes no bake Oreo truffles with 3 ingredients. It is an easy dessert recipe perfect for any holiday or any time you’re craving a sweet treat!

Oreo cake balls in Christmas colors on a white plate

My kiddos absolutely love OREO cookies, and these no bake cookie balls are one of their favorite dessert recipes to make for Christmas.

You only need 3 simple ingredients for this easy dessert, and they are incredibly easy to prepare!

All you need for these holiday treats are OREOs, or brand of sandwich cookie, cream cheese and chocolate, white chocolate or candy coating. You can also get creative and use your favorite cookie flavor.

Other no bake treats you might like are bourbon balls, chocolate peppermint fudge, white chocolate peppermint fudge, fantasy fudge chocolate peanut butter fudge and cornflake wreath cookies.

Ingredients

You can find Oreo cake balls ingredients in your local grocery store or online.

  • 8-oz cream cheese — softened at room temperature
  • OREO cookies — 1 package of Oreo cookies
  • Candy coating melts
  • Decorative holiday sprinkles (if desired)

How to Make OREO Cake Balls

First, crush up the cookies in a food processor. Or, you can crush cookies in a zip top bag, using a rolling pin or the flat side of a mallet.

This is how we usually start this crushed Oreos cookie recipe!

Next, mix the softened cream cheese with the cookie crumbs in a large bowl. Mix cream cheese and crushed cookies with an electric mixer, stand mixer, or just your hands.

You’ll have big lump of OREO cream cheese when you’re done!

Roll the crushed Oreo mixture into small 1-inch balls. The kids love helping with this part and don’t mind getting their hands dirty.

We usually make even-sized, small cookie balls, but you can roll the Oreo balls into different sizes if you’d like.

The mixture is pretty gooey, so I recommend removing your rings, if you can. Otherwise, you may end up with chocolate diamonds — just saying.

Place the rolled balls onto a prepared baking sheet or cookie sheet covered with wax paper or parchment paper.

Now, pop the balls into the freezer for about 10 minutes. This helps them firm up. Don’t let them get completely frozen, though, or the coating won’t work well.

To decorate, dip cake balls into the melted candy coating. Then, place them back onto the lined baking sheet to dry.

Since it’s Christmas, we used candy coating in holiday colors. Sometimes, we dip the balls into melted chocolate first and then dip them into the candy coating, as well.

You can use holiday-themed sprinkles to decorate them. We like to drizzle different colors over the top, too!

White chocolate drizzle in particular looks great against red and green!

We used some crushed peppermint candies to top some of the red balls.

If you want to go all out on the peppermint theme, you can even add some peppermint extract for extra flavor, or crushed candy canes on top.

Variations

Of course, there’s already tons of variety in decorating these no-bake OREO balls!

Use different color candy melts, mix and match different melted chocolate flavors with candy coating, and choose whatever kinds of sprinkles and toppings you want. We love making red, white and blue Oreo balls for the 4th of July!

If you want to use less candy coating, melt milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate chips or bars, and dip the cookie balls in that instead, for a delicious chocolate coating.

You can also choose different OREO cookie flavors. The classic OREO cookie is great, but we love the ones with mint filling and chocolate filling. If you want to make cookie balls without chocolate, use lemon or golden OREOs.

Stick a lollipop stick in the center of each of these sweet treats, and you can eat them like OREO cake pops–a perfect treat for kids!

How to Store

Store the cookie balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you keep the cake balls flat, they’ll also keep in a plastic bag or Ziplock bag.

Since these Oreo cream cheese balls contain dairy, they need to stay cool.

For longer storage, you can freeze them. Or, make the cookie balls ahead of time and freeze until ready to dip in the candy coating!

You can also pop Oreo balls in the freezer for a bit if you know they’ll be sitting out at room temperature for a while, like during holiday season parties. Just let them thaw in the fridge before serving.
