Watermelon Feta and Blueberry Salad is a refreshing summer salad with juicy watermelon, fresh blueberries and salty feta cheese. This easy recipe makes a gorgeous red white and blue salad perfect for any patriotic holiday.
Table of Contents
It’s the season for patriotic recipes, and I have a super simple red, white and blue salad to share with you today. This 3 ingredient recipe is one of the easiest summer salads you can make and goes with just about everything! The combo of sweet watermelon, juicy blueberries and creamy feta is absolutely delicious!
I love watermelon, but let’s face it — that stuff can be messy! For the kids, I find it usually works best to cut up the watermelon so that it can be easily devoured with a fork. Otherwise, the watermelon juice is all over them, the chairs, floor, house — you get the idea.
I started making this watermelon salad recipe years ago, and it’s now a summer staple! Try my Tropical Fruit Salad or my strawberry Jello fruit salad or check out more salad recipes in the recipe archives.
Ingredients
You only need 3 simple ingredients for watermelon blueberry feta salad. They should be easy to find in the grocery store or farmers market.
- Watermelon — Look for a juicy ripe watermelon. A fresh watermelon without seeds is your best bet.
- Blueberries — Fresh blueberries are a must!
- Feta cheese — Either buy a block of feta that you can cut into cubes or crumbled feta that you can sprinkle over the salad.
How to Make Watermelon Feta Salad with Blueberries
If you’re using a whole watermelon, cut it up, remove the rind, and remove the seeds. Look for a seedless watermelon, and you have one less step to do!
If you want to make this easy salad even easier, go with pre-cut watermelon from the deli area. Super, super simple — and fast!
Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes. Then, toss them into a large bowl or serving bowl.
Next, wash the blueberries under cold water, and remove any stems or mushy berries. Drain the blueberries well.
Pat them dry, and add them to the serving bowl.
Feta gives the salad a nice salty taste and adds the white you need for a red, white and blue salad. Since I’m one of those people who loves salt on watermelon, I love the added feta!
Toss some feta cheese in with the watermelon and blueberries. That’s all you have to do to make this salad!
How to Store Watermelon Salad
Place the salad in an airtight container, or cover the serving bowl with plastic wrap. Store this blueberry feta watermelon salad in the refrigerator until ready to serve. It will stay fresh for about 1 day before it starts to get mushy.
If you have leftovers, you can freeze watermelon and blueberries, but the texture won’t be the same — it will be mushy, but good for a quick smoothie!
Recipe Variations
If you’re not a feta fan, you could get the same look with gorgonzola. Cotija cheese or another similar white cheese would also work.
I prefer not to mess with the fresh flavors in the salad, buy you can make a simple salad dressing using balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar and a little olive oil.
Toss some fresh herbs, like fresh mint or fresh basil. If you don’t want a red white and blue fruit salad, omit the blueberries and add fresh cucumber or red onion.
Use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to make watermelon stars.
What to Serve with Red White and Blue Salad
Having a cookout? Serve this easy watermelon salad with Foil Grilled Corn, Ribs and Potato Salad.
For patriotic holidays like your 4th of July celebration or Memorial Day, add Red, White and Blue Candy Bark, Patriotic Pretzel Popcorn or Patriotic Pretzels. Round out the meal with Red White and Blue Poke Cake!
Recipe Tips
The best way to pick out a ripe watermelon is to choose a watermelon that feels heavy for its size, has a large yellow spot (field spot) on one side where it lay in the field and has a hollow sound when tapped with your fingers.
If you want to make fresh fruit salad the easiest way, buy pre-cut fresh watermelon from the store.
Be sure to check the blueberries and discard any stems or very mushy berries.
There really are no hard and fast rules for the quantities. Use as much of the ingredients as you need.
