Dollar Store Chalkboard Plate

Did you all have a nice Thanksgiving? I hope so! Ours was so nice, and later that night, the older kids and I ventured out and got a little shopping done, which wasn’t that bad. My teens actually love the crowds on Black Friday, but I’m not a fan at all!  Speaking of shopping, I’m still working on crafts from my last trip to the Dollar Store, and I have another easy Dollar Store craft to show you today.  

I found some nice chargers that I couldn’t pass up, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. I painted some chargers with chalkboard paint during the summer and fall, and I turned this Dollar Store charger into a festive chalkboard plate for Christmas.

To make a chalkboard plate, you’ll need:

• A large charger
• Spray paint
• Chalkboard paint
• Ribbon
• Glue

I admit that I absolutely love chalkboard projects. They’re easy, inexpensive, and it’s fun to change them with every season. I bought this gold charger, which was very nice, but for the holidays, I really wanted a red one.

So, this one got a couple of coats of Colonial Red spray paint from Rust-Oleum. It’s a little bit darker than some reds, but definitely not maroon.

After the paint dried, I used chalkboard paint in the center of the charger. I used about three coats of paint, waited the recommended 24-hour period and then primed the painted surface with a light dusting of chalk. This makes it easier to erase the chalk after you write on the surface.

I also found some festive ribbon at the Dollar Store, and I made a large bow and glued it to the top of the plate with hot glue.  

I debated whether to embellish the plate a little bit more, but I decided to leave it this way. But, you could easily add more decorations around the edge if you wanted to.

Isn’t this a lot different from before?! I already had chalkboard paint, so for the ribbon and the charger, this project only cost $2 to make — frugal! You can make one for your own home and give some away as gifts. This would make a great hostess gift, and it really adds a spot of Christmas cheer to the kitchen!
